Why do people harm themselves? Why do people cut? What can help?
First... cutters are not trying to kill themselves! It really means non suicidal self injury. Why do you think children and adults cut? burn? hair pulling?
Physical pain takes away emotional pain, can be addictive, alleviates stress, makes you feel better. Self-harmers have low self-esteem and harsh view of themselves. Some self harmers will cut words into their skin; all negative like, "I suck" "I am no good" "I am stupid". Isn't this so sad. Isn't so sad about the amount of judgement Self-Harmers do?

What and why some people self-harm
Self-harm may start with things some or most of us have experienced: breakup of an relationship--impulsive. Curiosity. Some adults and CHILDREN do this out of curiosity. IT IS A MYTH THAT MENTAL HEALTH BEHAVIORS ARE SIMPLY AND ATTENTION GETTER! This is so unfair and sad. A lot of suffering people have friends and family who do not believe them or offer support .
Did you know back in March I was in one of the lowest places in my life. The details are very personal and its hard to explain. As I was navigating one of the hardest places in my life, I was manic (bipolar) depressed, anxious, lonely, angry, furious, defeated, undesirable, and HURTING on the inside so bad. So, one day in March I decided that I couldn't take the pain I was feeling on the inside anymore. It was unbearable. Well, unbearable doesn't explain it and I had to do something to stop the pain in my brain and inside of my body. I sat in my car with an Exacto blade and began to cut my left wrist. The more I focused on cutting, the less I thought about the pain that I was feeling inside. Once I got to cut number 10, I realized what I was doing. It was like I snapped out of it and blood was everywhere. I was like if I keep doing this I will die and of course that wasn't my intention, but It could have happend. Then I started counting my blessings loud and in my head! I called my husband and told him to come help me with something in my car. He was phenomenal navigating his emotions, and my well-being. I love so many people and realized once at the hospital; I would never want to leave my loved ones in this manner. The hospital visit in the Psych area was an experience. (story for another day)
